RBI Updates on Rs 2,000 Banknotes Withdrawal
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has revealed that 98.47% of the Rs 2,000 denomination banknotes have been returned to the bank. This comes almost three years after the RBI announced the withdrawal of these notes from circulation on May 19, 2023, as part of its currency management efforts.
At the time of the withdrawal announcement, the total value of Rs 2,000 notes in circulation was 3.56 lakh crore rupees. According to the latest data, this amount has dropped significantly to 5,451 crore rupees as of April 30, 2026.
The RBI has made it possible for people to exchange their Rs 2,000 notes at 19 RBI issue offices since the withdrawal was declared. Despite the withdrawal and the return of most notes, the RBI has confirmed that Rs 2,000 banknotes remain legal tender and can still be used for transactions.
