Kerala Cancels SSLC and Plus Two Exams for Gulf Students Amid Conflict
The Kerala government has decided to cancel the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) and Plus Two exams for students living in the Gulf region. This decision was announced by Education Minister V Sivankutty on Thursday due to the ongoing conflict in West Asia.
The cancellation affects 633 students registered for the SSLC exams and 592 students for the second-year higher secondary exams in the Gulf. To avoid harming these students’ academic progress, the government has planned alternative ways to assess them.
Students who traveled from Kerala to the Gulf and got stuck there because of the conflict will also benefit from these measures. They need to provide proof of their original hall tickets, visas, and passports. Their school principals will verify these documents to confirm which exams they missed while abroad.
Options for Improvement and Results Timeline
Students unhappy with their results will get a chance to take improvement exams when they are scheduled. This ensures every student can fairly show their knowledge and skills.
The SSLC results are expected to be announced in the third week of May. The results for the second-year higher secondary exams should be out by May 25. This schedule offers some relief to students and parents worried about the cancellations affecting academic progress.
Strengthening Grievance Redressal Mechanisms
Minister Sivankutty also spoke about concerns with the continuous assessment system in schools. Some complaints said teachers gave marks without fully understanding the assessment goals. To improve fairness and transparency, the minister said the government will strengthen the grievance redressal system for continuous assessments.
- Assessment scores will be clearly shown on school notice boards.
- Complaints about assessments will be checked by school-level monitoring committees.
New Study Support Program for Struggling Students
The Kerala government has started a study support program for students in classes 5 to 9 who scored less than 30 percent in written exams. This program will run from April 20 to 27, 2026, and aims to give extra academic help.
After the program, special exams will be held at schools. A promotion list will be published to help these students move forward academically. The Director of General Education has already received detailed instructions to carry out this program.
