India Sets New Peak Electricity Demand Record

India achieved a historic milestone by meeting its highest-ever electricity demand of 256.1 gigawatts (GW) in April. This peak was reached without any power shortages, demonstrating the strength and reliability of the country’s power grid.

Role of Solar and Renewable Energy

Solar energy was a key contributor to this success, providing nearly 21 percent of the total electricity during peak hours. At the time of highest demand, solar power generated 57 GW, and during midday, it produced about 81 GW. This marks a significant shift in India’s energy mix, with clean and renewable sources playing a bigger role in meeting the growing electricity needs.

Additional Details on Power Supply

The increase in electricity demand was driven by rising summer temperatures, with consumption in April 2026 rising by 8.9% compared to the same month last year. Thermal power plants supplied the majority of electricity during peak times, contributing about 66.9%. Other renewable sources like hydro and wind also added to the supply, with hydro at 4.4% and wind at 1.9%.

India’s power grid not only met the peak demand but also continued to export electricity to neighboring countries, showing strong energy security.

Capacity Expansion and Policy

To support the growing demand and improve grid reliability, India added around 65 GW of new power generation capacity in the fiscal year 2025–26. The government also introduced the National Electricity Policy 2026 in January to guide future developments in the power sector.
