Introduction
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced a new Two Board Examination Scheme for Class 10 students, starting with the 2026 exams. This plan, first shared on June 25, 2025, allows private candidates to improve their results by taking a second exam.
Students taking the main board exams in 2026 can retake up to three subjects in a second exam scheduled for May 2026. This helps those who want to improve their scores. CBSE has also shared detailed rules for private candidates who want to join these second exams.
Eligibility Criteria for the Second Board Examination
To be eligible for the second board exam, candidates must meet certain conditions set by CBSE. These candidates will be placed in the third-chance compartment category, giving them another chance to improve their marks.
- Candidates who were in the Compartment category during the 2024-25 academic year.
- Candidates who were also in the Compartment category but were eligible for other exams in the same year and did not appear for the main exams in 2026.
Application Process for Private Candidates
The application for the second board exam must be done online through the official CBSE website: CBSE Private Candidates Portal. Simply filling out the form is not enough; candidates must also pay the exam fees for the application to be valid.
The List of Candidates (LOC) and fees must be submitted in two stages. To avoid extra charges, candidates should apply during the first stage.
Examination Details and Fee Structure
CBSE confirmed that the syllabus for the second board exam in 2026 will be the same as the first exam. This ensures all students are tested fairly.
| Examination Area | Fee (Per Candidate per Subject) |
|---|---|
| India | Rs. 2200 |
| Nepal and Other Countries | Rs. 2200 |
A late fee of Rs. 2000 will be charged if fees are not paid on time. All payments must be made online, supporting CBSE’s digital approach.
Important Guidelines for Candidates
CBSE has set clear rules to make sure candidates follow the application process properly. These include:
- Candidates must choose their exam city carefully because this cannot be changed later.
- Applications without fee payment will be cancelled automatically without notice.
Implications for Students
The Two Board Examination Scheme is a big step for Class 10 students, especially private candidates. It gives them a second chance to improve their results and shows CBSE’s support for students’ education. By allowing retakes in certain subjects, CBSE recognizes the challenges students face and aims to make exams fairer for everyone.
