Introduction
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is changing how Class 10 exams work starting in 2026. The main change is the “best-of-two” rule, which helps students do better without worrying about losing marks.
Students will take two board exams in the same year. The first exam is mandatory and happens in mid-February. The second exam is optional and takes place in May. This second chance is useful for students who want to improve their scores or those who need to clear failed subjects.
This new system follows the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which supports giving students more chances to show their skills and lowers the pressure of one big exam.
How the Scoring Works
With the best-of-two rule, if a student takes the second exam, CBSE will keep the higher score from the two attempts. If the second score is lower, the first score stays safe. This removes the fear of losing marks by trying again.
This change makes the second exam a chance to improve, not a risk. Students can focus on learning better without stress about their earlier results.
Eligibility and Subject Limitations
All students must take the first exam. But if a student misses three or more subjects in the first exam, they cannot take the second exam and will have to repeat the year.
Students can only try to improve scores in up to three subjects. These subjects include Science, Mathematics, Social Science, and languages. Students cannot change subjects between the two exams, except in Mathematics, where they can switch between Basic and Standard levels.
Assessment and Results Timeline
Internal assessments happen once before the first exam and count for both exams. This keeps the process simple and avoids repeating assessments.
Results for the first exam are already out. Results for the second exam will come in June. Final certificates and passing documents will be given only after the second exam finishes.
Students who skip the second exam can use their first exam results to apply for Class 11. Also, first exam results will be available on DigiLocker soon after they are announced.
Special Provisions for Students
CBSE has made special rules for some students. Those who play sports and have exam dates clashing with events can take the second exam. Students from schools in cold regions can choose which exam to take. Support for Children With Special Needs will be available for both exams.
This plan makes the best-of-two rule fair and easier for all students. The exams still focus on subjects and teachers, but the new system lowers the stress of one exam deciding everything.
