External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar arrived in Kingston, Jamaica, on May 2, 2026, marking the start of his first official visit to the Caribbean nation. He was warmly received by Jamaican Foreign Minister Kamina J. Smith upon arrival.
Dr. Jaishankar expressed his pleasure at reaching Kingston and looked forward to engaging with Jamaican leadership, the business community, and the Indian diaspora during his two-day stay.
Three-Nation Tour to Deepen Diplomatic Relations
The visit to Jamaica is part of a broader official tour that will include Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago, scheduled from May 2 to May 10, 2026. The Ministry of External Affairs highlighted that the trip aims to build on India’s longstanding political and cultural ties with these countries, reflecting a shared commitment to South-South cooperation and development.
Agenda Focuses on Bilateral and Regional Cooperation
During his visit, Dr. Jaishankar is expected to meet with top leaders of the three nations to discuss bilateral relations as well as regional and global issues of mutual interest. The trip underscores India’s historical and cultural connections with the Caribbean, particularly through the Girmitiya communities that trace their roots to Indian indentured laborers.
