EAM Jaishankar Begins Official Visit to Jamaica, Welcomed by Kamina J Smith

External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar arrived in Kingston, Jamaica, on May 2, 2026, marking his first official visit to the Caribbean nation. Upon arrival, he was warmly received by Jamaican Foreign Minister Kamina J. Smith.

Dr. Jaishankar expressed his pleasure at reaching Kingston and looked forward to engaging with Jamaican leadership, the business community, and members of the Indian diaspora during his two-day stay.

Part of a Three-Nation Tour

This visit is the first leg of a three-nation tour that includes Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago, scheduled from May 2 to May 10, 2026. The Ministry of External Affairs highlighted that the tour aims to build on India’s ongoing political engagements with these countries and reinforce longstanding friendly relations.

Focus on Strengthening Bilateral Relations

During his visit, Dr. Jaishankar is expected to meet with the leadership of Jamaica and discuss a broad range of issues, including bilateral cooperation as well as regional and global matters of mutual interest. The visit also underscores India’s historical and cultural connections with these nations, particularly through the Girmitiya communities.
