Government Reduces Vodafone Idea AGR Dues
The Department of Telecom (DoT) formed a committee to review Vodafone Idea’s AGR dues, initially set at ₹87,695 crore as of December 31, 2025. After reassessment, the dues were lowered to ₹64,046 crore.
Vodafone Idea must pay these dues in two parts over ten years. The first payment starts after five years, with a minimum of ₹100 crore annually for four years from fiscal year 2031-32 to 2034-35. The remaining amount will be paid in six equal yearly installments from 2035-36 to 2040-41.
Additionally, the company will pay ₹124 crore annually for AGR dues related to fiscal years 2018 and 2019, from March 2026 to March 2031. These dues were not part of the reassessment.
Payment Schedule Details
- Annual payment of ₹124 crore for FY 2018 and FY 2019 dues from 2026 to 2031.
- Minimum ₹100 crore annually for four years from 2032 to 2035.
- Remaining dues paid in six equal installments of ₹10,608 crore annually from 2036 to 2041.
Background and Relief Package
On December 31, the Union Cabinet approved a relief package for Vodafone Idea, freezing its outstanding AGR dues and granting a five-year moratorium on payments. This move followed a Supreme Court order allowing the government to reassess AGR dues comprehensively.
The relief aims to protect government interests, ensure orderly payments, maintain competition in the telecom sector, and safeguard the interests of about 20 crore Vodafone Idea customers.
AGR dues are fees telecom companies pay to the government based on their adjusted gross revenue, which includes license fees and spectrum charges.
Financial Challenges for Vodafone Idea
Vodafone Idea has faced a severe financial crisis due to intense competition, high debt, and large AGR liabilities. The company reported a loss of ₹17,418 crore in the nine months ending December 31, 2025, with a negative net worth of ₹87,744 crore and total debt of ₹2.09 lakh crore.
Despite subscriber losses in recent years, Vodafone Idea added over 1 lakh mobile subscribers in March 2026, showing signs of recovery.
