Delivery of Mahendragiri Frigate
Mahendragiri, the sixth ship in the Nilgiri-class (Project 17A), was handed over to the Indian Navy at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited in Mumbai. This event marks a significant achievement in India’s efforts to become self-reliant in warship design and construction.
Design and Features
The ship was designed by the Warship Design Bureau and supervised by the Warship Overseeing Team in Mumbai. The Project 17A frigates represent a major advancement in Indian naval technology, featuring improved stealth, survivability, and combat capabilities.
Mahendragiri is equipped with modern systems including Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) propulsion, which uses both diesel engines and gas turbines to power controllable pitch propellers. It also has an Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS) for efficient operations.
The ship carries advanced weapons and sensors for anti-surface, anti-air, and anti-submarine warfare, making it capable of handling multiple mission types.
Indigenous Content and Employment
The project has achieved about 75% indigenous content, involving over 200 Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) at Mazagon Dock. It has created direct employment for around 4,000 people and indirect employment for more than 10,000 individuals.
Delivery Timeline and Significance
Mahendragiri is the sixth P17A frigate delivered in less than 17 months since the first ship, Nilgiri, was handed over on December 20, 2024. This rapid delivery pace showcases India’s growing strength in warship building under the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Make in India’ initiatives.
