The Indian government has announced a plan to add 62 new vessels during the financial year 2026-27. This initiative involves an investment of ₹51,383 crore and aims to boost the country’s maritime capabilities and promote self-reliance in shipping.

The new vessels will increase India’s shipping capacity by 2.85 million gross tonnage (GT). The fleet expansion will include container ships, LPG carriers, crude oil carriers, and environmentally friendly tugboats. These additions are expected to improve the resilience of India’s supply chains.

Joint Ventures and Strategic Planning

A joint venture between the Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) and various oil public sector companies is underway to acquire 59 of these vessels. This collaboration is part of a larger effort to strengthen the country’s maritime infrastructure.

The plan was discussed in a high-level inter-ministerial meeting led by Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. Officials from multiple ministries and organizations participated to coordinate efforts and ensure smooth implementation.

Future Roadmap and Specialized Vessels

The government is preparing a white paper to identify gaps in the maritime sector, set clear targets, and develop a detailed roadmap. This document will guide future policies and investments with input from various ministries.

The Shipping Corporation of India is also equipped to build specialized vessels, including those designed for transporting ammonia, supporting India’s growing energy and industrial needs.
